Lawton Academy believes that gifted children are an important resource for solving problems of the future. As such, it is our intent to encourage students to think as employers rather than employees. It is the responsibility of this school to provide a differentiated curriculum aimed at meeting the needs of gifted students. Classes are designed to engage students in meaningful research, to develop problem-solving strategies, and to promote critical and creative thinking. Students will be offered a rigorous curriculum that will not only satisfy their intellectual curiousity, but will also create the opportunity for maximizing potential. Because gifted students learn well in several modalities, the students at Lawton Academy will be required to explore the arts and sciences fully, with participation in advanced-level classes and fine arts (music, art, technology, theater) being required of all students.
Definition for Gifted
Gifted Student: A student who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or special ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities.
